FIGHT CLUB April 27 – April 30, 2023

The art gallery for ultra contemporary art BETTER GO SOUTH, which opened not even a year ago, announces its exhibition "Fightclub".

Matching the film plot of "Fightclub", American artist Sara Birns addresses the theme of a 'split-personality', creating a psychological level of interpretation. Californian artists Landon Pointer and Ben Crase present works in which physical combat is seen in the form of a boxing duel. Spanish artist Adriana Oliver illuminates a historical and social perspective by depicting a woman's struggle and her role as a mother in the 1960s.

Danish artist Rune Christensen, whose work has been seen in Beirut, Sydney and London, among other places, also interprets the title with a mystical battle scene. In Christensen's works, there is an intensely overwhelming, excited melting pot of scents, colors, looks and people: Each painting is the culmination of a rich life - in this case, he depicts the climax of a fight between two tigers.

Alongside Fátima De Juan, who lives and works in Mallorca and is represented by the Spanish gallery L21, the Los Angeles-based artist Canyon Castator, who is known for choosing very large formats that satirically address our social reality, bringing together an exuberant mix of characters from the Internet, modern media, politics and personal experiences, the Dutch, Zurich-based artist Pascal Möhlmann, who has collaborated with Virgil Abloh for Off-White, among others, and has already been shown at Duve Berlin and König Galerie, the hip Austrian artist Anouk Lamm Anouk, who interpreted the theme with two aesthetic horse heads - and some other talents like Philip Gerald, Andy Kassier the exhibition becomes a total work of art.

The visual for the exhibition was deliberately created 100% with Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is to bring another level of struggle into focus: the current and future struggle between artists and AI. The question is thrown into the ring whether artists should feel threatened by AI in their role or whether humans are (still) superior to machines in terms of creativity? The answer to this will be on display at "Fightclub".

"'Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy' - we wanted to counter the famous quote from the movie "FIGHTCLUB" with the show: so our artists have each created a work that shows visitors unique creativity and sensitivity of human art-makers," says gallery director Michi Preuss about the show.

"Our exhibition is not only meant to showcase outstanding art, but as an overall concept, it is also meant to spark reflection on what we as a society can expect from AI and the importance of creativity in our world," adds Leonie Dorsch, Gallery Director at BETTER GO SOUTH.

Focusing on ultra-contemporary art with an emphasis on young, international and emerging artists, Better Go South gallery is led by Leonie Dorsch and Michi Preuss and supported by artist Tim Bengel. Together with JMES World, a Berlin-based art-tech start-up with a focus on fractionalizing art, 'Fightclub' was on view at the JMES Club space in Berlin Mitte from April 27-30, 2023.
